Comments Off on Introducing our new Education Officer

Sussex Community Rail Partnership (‘SCRP’), the local community group which encourages people to travel by train, has a new education officer.

Maddy Mills joined the SCRP team at the beginning of August.  Maddy will focus on delivering the Go Learn project across Sussex with the aim of giving young people the skills for safe, independent train travel, in partnership with Southern rail.  With 19 years’ experience Maddy has worked with young people throughout her career starting out as an Education Officer in a military museum, working with 3 – 18 years olds, before moving to the Education Business Partnership in West Sussex and working with secondary aged students to develop their employability skills etc.  Her last post was as an Area Manager for Young Enterprise, a charity aimed at helping young people aged 5 – 18 gain the skills and knowledge to succeed in life after education.

Maddy says, “I am delighted to be taking on the role of Education Officer at SCRP.  I am passionate about preparing young people for their adult lives and I want to help the Sussex Community Rail Partnership raise awareness of their important safety messages and promoting sustainable travel.  I was fortunate enough to shadow Angie Lowen, who built up the Go Learn project, in several schools before she retired.  I was amazed at how much the pupils remembered from their Junior Citizenship and Safety in Action workshops – it proves they work!  I look forward to building on the foundations laid down by Angie.”

Andy Harrowell, Southern’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, added: “Over the last three years our work with SCRP on the Go-Learn project has reached almost 18,000 children, and even won the Safety and Engineering category of the Rail Industry Innovation Awards in 2016. The project is something we are extremely proud of and this is in large part due to the efforts of Angie, in partnership with our teams, and we wish her the best in her retirement. Equally, all of us look forward to working closely with Maddy on this very important programme, helping to provide youngsters with the skills and knowledge to travel safely by train.
