Dec 2011 Cable Theft - putting us all at risk - Act Now!
18/11/2011
Cable theft from our railways is a problem which affects all train operating companies.
In recent months, Southern has experienced two cable theft incidents.
On Tuesday 6 September this year a large length of cable was stolen from the railway near London Bridge. This resulted in disruption for both the Sussex and Kent routes, with 10,610 delay minutes, and 176 cancellations. The second incident was at Littlehampton on the same day, and saw an additional 3,227 in delay minutes as well as 46 more cancellations.
Southern is therefore supporting a Government e-petition on metal theft, ahead of a Private Members Bill being presented to the House of Commons on Tuesday. The Private Members Bill proposes a full package of legislative changes considered necessary by the industry and the police. The more staff, stakeholders and passengers who sign the e-Petition, the more momentum will be built for further activity in the Commons and the Lords calling for the government to take action. http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/21165
Cable theft has the potential to cause massive disruption to Southern passengers as the above incidents proved.
We at Southern would urge you to support the move to improve legislation in this area.
