Oxted is the main town serving the southern part of Tandridge District. The station opened in 1884 and the town grew around it as the area became popular for commuters. The town centre, split by the railway into Station Road East and Station Road West, has many shops, restaurants and services. It is characterised by a large number of specialist individual shops and there are some main chain stores.
