Each month the SCRP will focus on one of our lines and feature news about a station partner, volunteer, or project to highlight the work that we do. This month it’s the Sussex Coast Line.
This article is dedicated to the memory of Dinah Wheatley, Keep Lancing Lovely volunteer, who passed away on 13th July 2019.
The Sussex Coast Line CRP was set up in 2018, with a launch event at Shoreham Port, a station partner at nearby Southwick station.
Before the CRP was formalised, there were a number of station partners, working hard to enhance the stations along the line. They were all invited to the launch event, along with others who might be interested in learning more about station partnership ……. and that’s how I came to know the Keep Lancing Lovely Group.
The Keep Lancing Lovely Group (KLL) chaired by Andy Brook, had primarily been set up to organise litter picks in the village, and beach clean events. As popularity in these events grew, and membership increased, KLL started to take an interest in an unused and un-loved area at the edge of Lancing railway station. When I met them, they were ‘guerrilla gardeners’ – planting, clearing litter and generally brightening up the area. They really wanted to utilise the wonderful station area, including the bookings hall, particularly to install commemorative installations as 2018 was the Centenary of the First World War Armistice.
So, after much discussion, it was agreed that KLL would adopt Lancing Station and become approved station partners, with Site Access Permits issued.
I have been unfailingly impressed by the willingness of these volunteers, to contribute to joint projects, or to instigate their own initiatives at the station. They really have done so much, far more than I can mention here:
Thank you Andy, Wendy, Keith and all at Keep Lancing Lovely for all you do to enhance the station and its environs.
Rowena Tyler, Sussex Coast Line Officer (Littlehampton to Southwick).
